Description
Keith Rittmaster, Natural Science Curator at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC, will talk about dolphins at 7:00 PM on June 18 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina. Once hunted in NC for oil, leather, fertilizer, and food, bottlenose dolphins are now a protected species and can be seen year-round in estuaries and along the NC coast. Using a slide presentation as well as interactive displays, Rittmaster will discuss dolphins’ anatomy, physiology, natural history, conservation efforts, migration, residency, associations, reproduction, and causes of mortality in NC.
Rittmaster has worked as a marine mammal scientist on numerous research projects. In 1985, he and his colleagues began a long-term photo-identification study of bottlenose dolphins near Beaufort. Rittmaster and his wife, Vicky Thayer, respond to reports of entangled marine animals as part of the NC Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
