SUMMARY:Dolphin Expert Speaks at Museum of Coastal Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Keith Rittmaster\, Natural Science Curator at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort\, NC\, will talk about dolphins at 7:00 PM on June 18 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina. Once hunted in NC for oil\, leather\, fertilizer\, and food\, bottlenose dolphins are now a protected species and can be seen year-round in estuaries and along the NC coast. Using a slide presentation as well as interactive displays\, Rittmaster will discuss dolphins' anatomy\, physiology\, natural history\, conservation efforts\, migration\, residency\, associations\, reproduction\, and causes of mortality in NC.\n\n\n\nRittmaster has worked as a marine mammal scientist on numerous research projects. In 1985\, he and his colleagues began a long-term photo-identification study of bottlenose dolphins near Beaufort. Rittmaster and his wife\, Vicky Thayer\, respond to reports of entangled marine animals as part of the NC Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
