Description
The Museum of Coastal Carolina is getting ready to welcome its biggest summer exhibit ever. On May 25, the Museum will welcome Herman the Sperm Whale. Herman is a fossilized skeleton of what appears to be an adult Sperm Whale (Orycterocetus crocodilinus). The massive fossil was discovered by Dr. Jack Hall of UNCW at the Aurora Fossil Pit in 1992. Dr. Hall believes that the animal lived during the Miocene period five to twenty-five million years ago. Dr. Halls believes that the scars on the rib bones could indicate a possible attack by an extinct species of shark called a Megalodon. Dr. Hall will be on hand at the Museum on May 25 to answer any questions you may have about the exhibit, including why he named it Herman.
The Museum of Coastal Carolina is located at 21 East Second Street in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The Museum is open on May 25 from 10:00 to 1:30. Admission is free for Museum and Dual members. Non-member all-day admission is $8 for adults (13-61), $7 for seniors (62+), $6 for children (3-12), and free for ages 2 and under.
