Ingram Planetarium is presenting a special evening program at 7:30 on April 20. The evening will begin with a special viewing of “Two Pieces of Glass.” This Sky Theater show is about telescopes, from backyard telescopes to powerful space telescopes such as the Hubble. You will learn about the history of telescopes – how they work and how they were developed. After the show, Planetarium Director Mark Jankowski will host a live star show in the Sky Theater, pointing out the planets and constellations that can currently be seen in the night sky.
After the indoor star show, you’ll have a chance to take you newly acquired knowledge outside. Weather permitting, members of Coastal Carolina University’s astronomy club will be waiting to help you view the real deal. They will have telescopes set up and will help you identify viewable celestial objects. If there is a clear night sky, you should be able to see Jupiter, Saturn, and the Moon. In addition, the Constellation Virgo will be visible in the East. Considered a galactic cluster, it contains many galaxies that share a point of gravity. Astronomers refer to it as the Virgo Cluster as opposed to the Local Cluster, which consists of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.
