The Highway 31 fire on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, damaged or destroyed nearly 175 homes in the Barefoot community. In recognition of SCs most devastating fire, the Museum welcomes a panel of professionals to discuss Horry County's Buist Tract and how weather contributed to the perfect fire storm in 2009. You'll also learn wildfire prevention tips for homes and businesses.
Joshua Weiss, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, will review the region's inherent fire fuel and the Barefoot fire's facts, figures, and photos. Chief Tom Barstow, North Myrtle Beach Fire /Rescue, will offer first-hand accounts of the local event. Steve Moore, SC state Firewise coordinator, will offer tips for keeping your home safe from a wildfire. Whether you were directly affected by the fire or you just want to know more about wildfire planning and prevention, plan to attend the informative presentation.
