Children's Art & Pottery Summer Schedule at Sunset River Marketplace

 Sunset River Marketplace, the eclectic art gallery in Calabash, N.C. has announced its schedule of summer art classes for children. This year there are two instruction series.

Children’s Summer Fun, an eight-week series of individual classes with instructor Teresa Reiter, is set for Wednesday mornings from ten o’clock until 12 noon beginning June 19 and running through August 7. Each class features a different activity. Children may attend a single class or the entire series. Cost is $15 per child per class. The age range is six to 12 years old.
 
The schedule is: June 19, Jewelry Making: Create bracelets and necklaces from clay, wood and bottle caps; June 26, Printmaking; Sea Life: Create a 9- x 12-inch print; July 3, Shadow Box Creation: Children will use their own names as the theme for this class; July 10, Fish Sculpture; July 17, Acrylic Painting: splatter, roll, dip and spray; July 24, Wearable Art: Create your own tee shirt; July 31, Collage assemblage; August 7; to be announced.
 
New this year, Children’s Pottery, a four-week series for children aged eight through 12 years old, is being taught by Jamie Futera. The cost is $100 per child for the four-week session and includes clay. Students will learn the basics of pottery such as working with clay, using the kiln and firing the pottery, all in a manner appropriate for young children.
 
During the first class, children will learn the “feel” of the clay by making birds out of simple “pinch pots.” For the second class, the group will progress to creating a garden plaque. The children will work with slabs of clay, focusing on design. This project is designed to teach them to look ahead to the finished project. Class number three features coil pot making. The children will learn to make a functional piece. They will be designing mugs or decorative bowls with handles. The fourth and final class is all about color and glazing.
 
Instructor Jamie Futera says, “All of the classes will deal with texture and contour. The kids will learn to look at the piece as a whole. In doing this, they will be able to develop the design by understanding the surface and the space they are working on.
