SUMMARY:Guided Bird Island Coastal Reserve Walk
DESCRIPTION:On September 28\, the Museum of Coastal Carolina is featuring a guided walk on the Bird Island Coastal Reserve in Sunset Beach. Bird Island is an undeveloped barrier island located between the Town of Sunset Beach and the Little River Inlet in South Carolina. The Reserve site encompasses 1\,481 acres.\n\n\n\nVisitors interested in the guided walk will first meet in the Museum's Lecture Hall at 11:00 to watch a short presentation by Jim Barber\, who will talk about Bird Island's history and natural resources. Visitors will then carpool to Sunset Beach where several Bird Island stewards will take them on a guided walk of the island\, highlighting the various elements of the Reserve that make it such a unique place to enjoy.\n\n\n\nThis event coincides with National Take A Child Outside Week (September 24-30). It's a great opportunity to bring a child outside for a fun\, educational excursion.\n\nJim Barber is a full-time resident of Sunset Beach and a coordinator of the Bird Island stewards. He serves on the boards of the Bird Island Preservation Society and the North Carolina Coastal Management Division's Local Advisory Board. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in economics from Colgate University. Jim's wife\, Linda\, is also a steward and is active with the Sunset Beach Sea Turtle Patrol.\n\n\n\nThe Museum of Coastal Carolina is located at 21 East Second Street in Ocean Isle Beach\, NC. Admission is free for Museum and Dual Museum/Planetarium members. Non-member all-day admission is $8 for adults (13-61)\, $7 for seniors (62+)\, $6 for children (3-12)\, and free for ages 2 and under. For more information\, call 910-579-1016 or visit www.MuseumPlanetarium.org. In case of inclement weather\, an indoor program about Bird Island is planned.
